Why the app price has to be higher
Sell a dish over the counter and, VAT aside, the money is yours. Sell it on an app and the app takes its commission first, as a share of the app price. So the same dish has to cost more on the app just to leave you what you make in the shop. In the example above, a £5.99 dish needs to be £9.36 on Uber Eats at 30% before it leaves you the same profit.
How we work it out
- Cost to make: the ingredients plus the packaging.
- Left after VAT: the price ÷ 1.2 if you’re VAT registered; the whole price if you’re not.
- Profit in the shop: left after VAT, minus the cost to make.
- Commission: the app price × the app’s rate. If you’re not VAT registered, it costs you 20% more, because you can’t claim back the VAT on it.
- Profit on the app: left after VAT, minus the cost to make, minus the commission.
- Price to make what the shop makes: the app price where profit on the app equals profit in the shop, rounded up to the next penny.
- Margin: profit ÷ what’s left after VAT.
Delivery is a separate sum. If your own drivers deliver, see own drivers or the app’s couriers.
How much do Uber Eats, Deliveroo and Just Eat charge UK takeaways?
These are the standard UK commission rates each app publishes for restaurants, read on 15 October 2026. Your own contract can differ, so check the rate on your statement.
- Uber Eats: 13% if you deliver yourself, and 13% for collection. 30% if Uber delivers, or 33% on orders from Uber One members. Uber lists these before VAT, plus a £650 activation fee. Uber Eats UK merchant pricing, read 15 October 2026.
- Just Eat: 14% commission when you deliver with your own drivers, and 30% when Just Eat delivers, each plus VAT and taken on the order. On a £20 order that’s £3.36 and £7.20. Just Eat partner sign-up, “How much commission will I pay?”, read 15 October 2026.
- Deliveroo: varies by contract — check your statement. Deliveroo’s UK partner page publishes no rate. Deliveroo for restaurants, read 15 October 2026.
Before you ask
Questions owners ask
Why does being VAT registered change the answer?
If you’re registered, part of every price you charge is VAT you pass on, so you keep less of it, but you can reclaim the VAT the app charges on its fee. If you’re not registered, you keep the whole price, but that VAT on the fee is a cost to you.
Is the commission on the dish or on the whole order?
Here it’s worked out on the dish’s price. Some contracts charge it on the whole order, or add a fixed amount per order. If yours does, each dish costs you more in commission than this shows, so check the rate and the terms you were given.
Does this include delivery, card fees or wages?
No. It’s the dish on its own: what it costs to make, its packaging and the app’s fee. Card fees in the shop, delivery costs and staff time aren’t in it.
Is anything I type saved or sent?
No. The sums run in your browser. Nothing is stored, nothing is sent, and closing the page clears it.
